5Rhythms is a dynamic movement practice, a practice of being in your body, that ignites creativity, connection, and community.

 

The 5Rhythms

The 5Rhythms Dance is a powerful movement practice and a dance meditation made for everyone regardless of age, shape, gender or physical level. The different rhythms, Flow, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness, create a wave of energy, which allow us to get in touch with our feelings and to express the beauty of our inner world as energy in motion.

The 5Rhythms is based on specific and defined set of maps that lead practitioners towards fully and fluidly embodying each of the 5Rhythms. The discipline of the practice focuses on developing particular qualities of movement, breath and presence in one’s body, and on clearly articulating the rhythms in one’s own dance.

Most 5Rhythms classes and workshops involve awareness practices, movement exercises, solo, partner and group work. Teachers guide the group verbally as they move or take time to teach about the theme the group is working with.

We can release our tensions and let go of what we no longer need to hold on to. By moving with this wave of energy we unleash the power, which is hidden within us. We create a space where our unique qualities can become alive.

Practiced by tens of thousands world wide, 5Rhythms is a philosophy, perspective, performance art and a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself.

Flowing          

The fluid, continuous, grounded glide of our own movements.

 

Staccato

The percussive, pulsing beat that shapes us a thousand different ways.

 

Chaos

The rhythm of letting go, releasing into the catalytic wildness of our dance that cannever be planned or repeated.

 

Lyrical

The rhythm of trance, where the weight of self-consciousness dissolves, where we lighten up and disappear into our own uniqueness.

 

Stillness

The quit emptiness, where gentle movements rise and fall, start and end in a field of silence.

 Gabrielle Roth (1941-2012)

Gabrielle is the founder of the 5Rhythms. She was an American dancer, theater director, author, philosopher and recording artist.

She created the 5Rhythms approach to movement in the late 1970s; there are now hundreds of 5Rhythms teachers worldwide who use her approach in their work.

Roth worked at the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health and at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. She also founded an experimental theatre company in New York, and wrote three books, created over twenty albums of trance dance music with her band The Mirrors, and directed or has been the subject of ten videos.
